BY 8:16 CLARE was out in the gazebo enjoying a glass of iced tea, a duck breast and some spinach salad. The sun was just beginning to set, lighting the surface of New Walden Pond in a warm red. A last construction worker was loading what looked like a wooden box into the bed of his truck. She gave him a spirited wave and he gave one back. The duck breast was ideally tender and flavorful, despite what the recipe had said. Clare had picked up the folder of baby portraits off the closet floor and was flipping through them as she ate.

One thing at a time, she’d told herself when she had first come up with the plan. Now that she had them unconscious in bed together she would have to think up some kind of story that involved her leaving for the night. Some kind of emergency, she would say. A friend in need. An old friend. No one Rod knew. Didn’t he remember when she left? Had he been too drunk to remember anything? (Not that she really would leave the house, of course. No, she would be on the couch, a light sleep, a few hours and then up to listen and to wait.)

And anyway, her explanation, whatever it ended up being, would come much later, after his. After she walked in and found the two of them in bed together. And then … And then … Well, then he would be sorry, wouldn’t he?

Clare wasn’t going through the baby portraits with any real purpose. They were just something to put her eyes on at while her mind ran in other directions. She wasn’t looking for anything, but she found it anyway. Only a few portraits from the last. One of the earliest she had drawn. There was something about that one. And suddenly Clare knew—the way a woman can know a thing.

It was a girl. Fair skin. Sharp eyebrows. “Small mouth=secrets (me).” And even her feet would be her mother’s.
